I finished reading Trampled Underfoot, the oral history of Led Zeppelin - I really enjoyed it, very interesting read. Tho' I must confess I still like reading about Led Zeppelin a lot more than I actually like listening to them (there are only a few of their songs that I like). One of the books I got for Christmas was the new biography of Joan Jett. It covered all her career (I was pleased they wrote a bit about the early 70s glam scene in Los Angeles centred round Rodney's English Disco tho' Sabel and Lori or any of the other groupies weren't mentioned by name) and had a comprehensive discography at the back but didn't ( Read more... )

Here are just some of the photos I have of Sabel Starr - she was a groupie in early 70s Los Angeles, one of a crowd of teenage girls who hung around Rodney's English Disco. She was with the likes of Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Johnny Thunders etc.

I finished reading Cherry Vanilla's autobiography, Lick Me. Altho she's perhaps best known as a groupie (and is quite unashamed about her exploits) there's also a lot more to her - she was a successful ad executive in 60s New York before starring in underground plays like Pork/hanging out with Warhol and Jayne County and becoming David Bowie's ( Read more... )

Got the new issue of Classic Rock magazine which had Brijitte West reviewing The Runaways movie and an old interview with The Cramps by Nick Kent (I wish Mojo would do a proper feature on them instead of constantly harping on about the fucking Beatles and Led Zeppelin all the time). I finished reading the new Bowie biography by Marc Spitz, it was OK and very thorough but in the end it felt like it was a little bit too in-depth and I wasn't sure I agreed with some of his conclusions esp. about the non Bowie stuff. I got the new issue of Q magazine which I really loved. It had a couple of good interviews with Slash and John Lydon plus a fairly interesting article on the last days of Jimi Hendrix and a review of I Love You Phillip Morris (I'm pleased to see it's coming to the Tyneside so I'm definitely going to try and go to see it ( Read more... )
